Antenatal Classes
Antenatal classes are the basis of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). The courses have been running for 50 years and are the yardstick which other courses are measured by. The value of the classes cannot be underestimated from both tutorial and social aspects.
Branches operate antenatal classes which both parents are invited to attend. There is much that the father can do during childbirth. Mothers can discuss all the various options for having the child. Information on the big day can be at a local branch or online at websites nct-orpington.org.uk.
The antenatal classes come as a standard package or a more intensive course. There are refresher courses for parents who already have kids but want some reminders on best practice. The NCT has all the expertise to hand, with health workers and medical support.
Local hospitals are more than happy to know prospective parents have been attending a course. It makes their job that bit easier. The practical skill covered in the standard antenatal classes cover breathing exercises, pain relief choices and advice on the first few days with baby. The more intensive class is simply done in a shorter period with more lengthy tutorials.
Classes run between 12 and 16 hours over a period of evenings or weekends. Costs are dependent on the area, but going to nct-orpington.org.uk will provide some of that information. The NCT recognises that cost is important so allowances can be made for those on benefits, and there are installment plans in place for all antenatal classes.
